How We Count Window Panes
(So You Can Get an Accurate Quote in Seconds)
If you’re using our instant quote form, you might be wondering:
“How do I count my windows properly?”
Don’t worry. It’s actually very simple, and even if you make a small mistake, we always verify everything before we start work.
Our goal is simple:
Make pricing fair, transparent, and fast.
First, don’t overthink it
Most customers count their panes correctly on the first try.
And even if you’re slightly off:
We adjust on site if needed.
You will never be charged for something you don’t have.
What counts as a window pane?
A pane is simply each piece of glass we clean.
Examples:
• A basic window with one piece of glass = 1 pane
• A window with top and bottom sections = 2 panes
• A sliding window = 2 panes
• A patio door = usually 2 panes
Each separate glass section takes time to:
- Wash
- Squeegee
- Detail edges
- Dry properly
This is why pane count gives the most fair pricing.
What about decorative windows?
Some homes have special shapes like:
- Circle windows
- Half-moon windows
- Triangle windows
- Hexagon windows
Because these take extra detailing, they usually count as 2 panes.
This keeps pricing consistent with the extra time required.
Windows with grids or dividers
A window that looks like 12 squares but is one glass sheet:
–> 1 pane
A true divided window with 4 separate glass pieces count:
–> 4 panes
A divided window with 12 separate small glass pieces under 8″ x 8″
count: –> 4 panes
A divided window with 12 separate small glass pieces under 8″ x 8″ and an irregular pane on top
count: –> 6 panes
When in doubt:
Count the glass, not the lines.
Sliding patio doors
Most patio doors are:
• 2 large glass sections = 2 panes
Large modern doors sometimes have 3 sections.
Again, just count the glass panels.
Why we use pane counting instead of house size
Two homes the same size can have completely different window counts.
Example:
Home A:
15 large windows
Home B:
40 small windows
Same size house.
Very different work.
The most important thing to know
You do not need to be perfect.
Most customers are within a few panes.
We always confirm counts when we arrive.
If something is different:
We adjust fairly.
